PEI COPC Board of Directors

 

Amy Smith – President

Amy moved to PEI in 2010 from Massachusetts with Verena Varga to start Heart Beet Organics, a diversified 1.5 acre organic vegetable farm in North Wiltshire PEI.  With a focus on greenhouse and high tunnel production, Amy and Verena sell their produce at the Charlottetown Farmer’s Market, through their CSA, and to several high quality restaurants.

 

Marc Schurman – Vice President

Marc and Krista Schurman along with their three children Ben, Quinton and Samantha own and operate Schurman Family Farm. They started the greenhouse business in 2001 as a way to diversify their farm operation and to fulfill Marc’s passion for growing things.

In 2008 Marc, Krista and the kids left the farm and headed out on a life adventure to Mexico and Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. In Mexico, Marc managed a 25-acre greenhouse where he gained a great deal of knowledge and experience in greenhouse management. He also gained an even deeper appreciation for local agriculture and organic production. In 2011, Marc and Krista moved back to the family farm in Kensington and introduced the brand  Atlantic Grown Organics to the Maritimes.

Today, Marc and Krista and the kids grow 100% certified organic tomatoes, English cucumbers and a variety of vegetables in their 2 acre greenhouse.

 

Jen Campbell – Secretary

Jen owns and operates Jen & Derek’s Organic Farm in Wilmot Valley just outside of Summerside.  From her 5 acre farm, she operates a community shared agriculture (CSA) program; and,  processes a wide range of specialty produce for  Plate It , for year round distribution into the food service sector across the province. Jen and her husband Derek along with their twin boys Ben & Jake moved their farming operation in the fall of 2011 from Brookvale to Wilmot Valley to be closer to Derek’s job and both their families.

 

Mike LaFortune – Treasurer

Mike operates The Dexter Cattle Company, raising pure-bred Dexter cattle on 100 acres of year-round pasture. He and his wife Evelyn, currently have 50 head of Dexters, with plans to grow the herd to over 200 and sell  organically produced grass- fed beef into local markets and pure-bred genetics beyond local borders.

 

Alexander MacKay – Director

Alexander owns and operates Alexander Fresh Vegetables. He grows a wide variety of fresh produce which he sells to local restaurants and directly to the public .

 

Matt Ramsay – Director

Matt operates Square One Organics, located near Kensington, and produces organic cereals in addition to participating in several on-farm trials, including malting barley, hemp, and as part of the Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security Participatory Plant Breeding program, focusing on wheat, oat and potato varieties.
